WPC (Wireless Planning & Coordination)

WPC registration is a mandatory authorization issued by the Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing (a branch of the Department of Telecommunications). The most common form is the ETA (Equipment Type Approval), which certifies that wireless and radio-frequency (RF) devices comply with India’s frequency spectrum regulations. It ensures that devices do not cause harmful interference with satellite, defense, or mobile communication networks.

It is mandatory for any device that uses wireless technologies like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, or Zigbee.

  • Import/Sale: Before you can legally import, sell, or distribute wireless electronics (e.g., smartwatches, routers, wireless earbuds, drones) in India.

  • De-licensed Bands: Specifically required for devices operating in "license-free" frequency bands (like $2.4\text{ GHz}$ or $5\text{ GHz}$).

  • Customs Clearance: Without a WPC ETA, customs authorities will seize shipments of wireless equipment.

Required Documents

  • RF Test Report: The core technical document (must be recent and from an accredited lab).

  • Business Credentials: GST Certificate, PAN Card, and Certificate of Incorporation.

  • Technical Datasheet: Document detailing the device’s internal wireless modules and specifications.

  • Authorization Letter: Appointing the AIR or a consultant to manage the application.

  • Import-Export Code (IEC): Essential if the purpose is importing the goods.

  • User Manual: To show the device's intended operation and frequency use.
