LMPC (Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities) Registration

LMPC stands for Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities registration. It is a mandatory authorization under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, for any business involved in importing, manufacturing, or packing "pre-packaged" goods—items packed without the consumer being present. It ensures that packaging displays essential declarations like net weight, MRP, and manufacturer details to protect consumer interests.

It is required before you start selling or importing pre-packaged commodities in the Indian market. Specifically:

  • Importers: Required for customs clearance of pre-packed goods (e.g., electronics, toys, or food).

  • Manufacturers/Packers: Required if you pack goods in a predetermined quantity for retail sale.

  • Timeline: Registration must be obtained within 90 days of beginning the packing or import operations.

  • Exemptions: Not required for packages weighing less than 10g/10ml or agricultural produce in bags over 50kg.

Required Documents

  • Business KYC: GST Certificate, Company PAN Card, and Certificate of Incorporation (CIN).

  • Identity Proof: Aadhaar and PAN of the applicant/authorized signatory.

  • IEC Code: Mandatory for Importers only.

  • Label Samples: A clear copy or photo of the packaging label showing the MRP, Net Weight, and Customer Care details.

  • Premise Proof: Ownership documents or a Rent Agreement for the warehouse/factory.

  • Firm Structure: Partnership Deed (for firms) or MOA/AOA (for companies).

  • Digital Signature (DSC): Required for online portal submissions.
